Reflections is a small, atmospheric landscape that captures a scene of lights shimmering across water at dusk. Julie Tugwell builds the image with lively palette-knife work, breaking the surface into flickering shards of colour so that the whole scene seems to ripple and move, the boundary between shore, sky and water gently dissolving.
The palette is largely cool, dominated by deep blues, slate greys and near-blacks, then lit from within by warm reflections of orange, gold and amber that dance across the water. Loose dabs of colour suggest distant buildings, foliage and the glow of lamps, while patches of pale sky open up overhead. It is impressionistic and evocative, more concerned with light and mood than with precise detail.
Its intimate scale makes it a lovely, jewel-like addition to a smaller wall, a hallway, a bookshelf ledge or a grouping of works. Reflections brings atmosphere and a sense of place to a room, its glowing colour and quiet drama drawing the eye and inviting a closer look.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. Whether working in bold colour or a restrained, tonal palette, she captures the atmosphere and vitality of a subject rather than a literal likeness. Her paintings range across florals, landscapes, figures and abstracts, and each original artwork is made to bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
