The Flowers of My He(art)
Acrylic on Unstretched Canvas
80 × 128 cm
R7 500
The Flowers of My He(art) is a striking, tender work that sets a female figure against a deep, near-black ground. The body is drawn almost entirely in fine white contour line — a suggestion of head, shoulder, breast and folded arms emerging from the darkness rather than a fully painted form. At the lower left, a cluster of soft pink orchids and blossoms breaks the shadow, their petals warmed with cream, rose and touches of green leaf.
The mood is quiet, intimate and a little poetic. The restraint of the dark background and delicate line drawing lets the flowers carry the colour and emotion of the piece, so the blooms feel like something the figure holds close. It is a work about tenderness and inner life, understated yet quietly affecting.
Tall and softly dramatic, this original suits a bedroom, hallway, lounge or a considered gallery wall. Its dark ground makes it easy to place against both pale and richly coloured walls, while the blush-pink flowers add a gentle, romantic warmth, bringing atmosphere and quiet sophistication to a contemporary interior.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic mark-making and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. Here she pairs a restrained, near-monochrome ground and delicate line with soft passages of floral colour, capturing mood and tenderness rather than a literal likeness, creating an original artwork that brings warmth, character and considered sophistication to a contemporary interior.
