Go Find Yourself is a large, exuberant figurative painting in which pale nude and semi-clad figures move through a dense tangle of tropical foliage and flowers. Julie Tugwell draws each figure with a loose, confident line, allowing the bodies to emerge from cascading leaves, curling ferns and bright scarlet blooms that press in from every edge of the canvas.
The palette is warm and vivid. A glowing golden-ochre ground opens up behind the figures, while ribbons of blue, teal and emerald foliage weave across the surface, punctuated by deep reds, soft violets and flashes of coral. There is a real sense of movement and reverie here, as though the figures are half-dreamed, discovering themselves within a lush, imagined garden.
At this generous scale the work becomes a genuine focal point, bringing energy, colour and a quiet narrative to a large wall. It suits a spacious living room, a stairwell or a considered reception area, anywhere a bold, life-affirming piece can be given room to breathe and enjoyed from across the room.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. Whether working in bold colour or a restrained, tonal palette, she captures the atmosphere and vitality of a subject rather than a literal likeness. Her paintings range across florals, landscapes, figures and abstracts, and each original artwork is made to bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
