Which Way

Oil On Stretched Canvas
75 × 90 cm
R9 000

Which Way is a soft, contemplative abstract washed in cool greens, watery blues and pale, chalky whites. Across the surface, small dabs and blocks of paint build up like scattered mosaic or dappled light, so the whole canvas shimmers with a gentle, atmospheric haze. Here and there a warm accent of terracotta or a thread of red surfaces from beneath the cooler tones, quietly guiding the eye through the composition.

There is no single subject to fix upon; instead the painting suggests reflection and drift — the play of light on water, a misted garden, a landscape half-remembered. Julie Tugwell keeps the palette restrained and harmonious, layering translucent oil so that colours seem to breathe through one another. The mood is calm and meditative, with just enough movement and warmth to keep the surface from ever feeling still or flat.

At seventy-five by ninety centimetres, Which Way is an easy, soothing presence for a bedroom, lounge, consulting room or quiet corner of an office. Its fresh, cool tones bring a sense of space and light to a wall, complementing natural materials and pale interiors while adding a considered, contemporary softness that is restful to live alongside.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her abstract work she often chooses a restrained, tonal palette, letting light, texture and layered colour carry the atmosphere rather than any literal subject. The result is an original artwork that brings warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
