Tempestous Petals Bloom at Noon — Acrylic and Charcoal on Stretched Canvas, 1350 × 1240 mm

This large, exuberant floral bursts with light and movement. Two great iris blooms unfurl across the canvas, their ruffled petals drawn in silvery blue, cream and violet, set against a shifting patchwork of lilac, ochre, turquoise and deep brown. The painting hums with midday brightness, as if the flowers are opening before your eyes.

Julie Tugwell combines acrylic with charcoal here, using bold, sketchy lines to describe the irises and their trailing stems while fields of broken colour dance behind them. Ribbons of magenta paint run freely down the surface, and quick charcoal marks flick across the blooms, giving the work a loose, spontaneous, almost stormy energy that suits its title.

The effect is rich, painterly and full of vitality, a celebration of colour and gesture rather than botanical detail. A generous statement piece, it brings drama and warmth to a large wall in a lounge, dining room or gallery-style hallway, and rewards close viewing with its layered marks and running paint. A striking original for lovers of bold, expressive florals.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, colour-led traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her florals she often reaches for warm, singing colour and rhythmic line, echoing the freedom of the Fauves while remaining entirely her own. She captures the vitality and atmosphere of her flowers rather than a literal likeness, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
