Where the Mountains Meet the Lilies
Acrylic on Stretched Canvas
102 × 76 cm
R9 500
Where the Mountains Meet the Lilies brings together two of the landscape’s great pleasures: a stand of white arum lilies in the foreground and a wide, brooding sky beyond. The lilies rise on strong, dark-veined leaves, their pale trumpets turned this way and that, while behind them a pale strip of water and a low band of deep red hills lead the eye toward distant clouds.
Julie Tugwell balances drama and calm in this larger work. The sky is worked in moody blues and greys, broken by soft blushes of pink where the light catches the cloud, and this cooler, atmospheric backdrop sets off the sculptural white of the lilies. The foliage is rich and dark, painted with bold, decorative outlines that give the flowers real structure and presence against the open horizon.
Generous in scale and quietly theatrical, this is a painting made to anchor a wall. It would suit a living room, dining room or hallway that can carry its size, bringing a sense of place, weather and stillness, and rewarding a longer look with its interplay of flower, water and sky.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. Here she moves between bold, sculptural flowers and a restrained, atmospheric sky, capturing the mood and vitality of a scene rather than a literal likeness. Her confident handling of colour and form brings warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
