Painters Haiku is a large square abstract that feels calm and unhurried, like a garden glimpsed through soft morning light. Julie Tugwell fills the canvas with clouds of cream, blush and pale sage, then lets small notes of cobalt, scarlet and forest green surface through the haze, so the eye drifts from one quiet incident of colour to the next.

Painted in acrylic on stretched canvas, the work is built from short, dabbing strokes that gather and disperse like blossom or scattered petals. There is no single focal point; instead the painting breathes across its whole surface, its gentle rhythm giving the title its sense of a small, contemplative poem.

The palette is light and airy, which makes the piece easy to live with and quietly uplifting. It brings a sense of space and softness to a bedroom, lounge or calm working space, and its muted, sophisticated colours sit happily against neutral walls, natural timber and soft furnishings. A large work that soothes rather than shouts.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her abstracts she lets colour, gesture and rhythm lead, building layered surfaces that reward slow looking. Whether working in bold colour or a more restrained, tonal palette, she captures atmosphere and vitality rather than literal description, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
