Dad’s Geraniums
Oil on Stretched Canvas
90 × 75 cm
R5 800
Dad’s Geraniums is a fresh, affectionate study of red geraniums set against a dreamy, light-filled ground. Two clusters of scarlet blooms sit on either side of the canvas, their rounded, scalloped leaves painted in soft sage and olive, while a lone flower head rises on a slender stem below. The subject is simple and familiar, and all the warmer for it.
Julie Tugwell surrounds the flowers with a shimmering wash of aqua, pale turquoise and cream, flecked with lilac, gold and the odd stroke of red picked up from the blooms. The background reads almost like water or dappled light, loose and abstract, so that the crisp red geraniums seem to float in a bright, airy space. The contrast of clear, saturated red against cool blue-green gives the painting a clean, cheerful lift.
Bright and welcoming, this is a painting that carries a quiet personal warmth. It would suit a kitchen, sunroom, bedroom or living space, bringing a touch of the garden indoors and a fresh, uplifting note of colour to relaxed, contemporary interiors.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose floral work echoes the clear colour and expressive energy of the painterly tradition, favouring loose brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. Here she sets crisp scarlet geraniums against a soft, dappled aqua ground, capturing the freshness and character of the flowers rather than a literal likeness. Her confident handling brings warmth, light and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
