Abstract Sea is a large, atmospheric seascape that captures the moody drama of the ocean on a grey day. Banks of cloud pile above a restless, deep-blue sea, their soft white and pale-grey forms dissolving into mist along the horizon, while below, the water breaks in cool blues, silver and hints of teal toward a dark, low shoreline in the foreground.
Julie Tugwell works here in a restrained, tonal palette of blues, greys and whites, warmed only by the faintest touches of ochre where light seems to filter through the cloud. Rather than describing the scene in detail, she builds it from scumbled, broken brushwork and drifting veils of paint, so that sky and sea seem to breathe and shift.
