My Guy
Acrylic On Unstretched Canvas
140 × 120 cm
R18 000
My Guy is a large, intimate figure study of a seated male nude, his head bowed and arms drawn across his body in a pose of quiet, inward reflection. Julie Tugwell draws the figure with fluid, confident contour lines and warm passages of ochre, terracotta and soft pink, letting the body emerge from the surrounding colour rather than sitting rigidly upon it. There is tenderness in the gesture and a real sense of a private, unguarded moment.
The figure is set within a loosely painted garden of greens, teals and golden yellows, where a few dandelion seed heads and drifting marks soften the space around him. The background is expressive and abstracted, its cool greens and warm earth tones both framing the figure and dissolving into him, so man and landscape feel bound together. The mood is gentle and reflective, painterly and human rather than idealised.
Generous at a metre and a half, My Guy is a striking, characterful work for a bedroom, studio, lounge or collector’s wall where an expressive figurative piece is welcome. Its warm, natural palette and thoughtful subject bring emotional depth and a sophisticated, contemporary sensibility to an interior, holding attention as a genuine focal point.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her figurative work she captures mood, gesture and humanity rather than a literal likeness, letting the figure and its setting merge through colour and line. The result is an original artwork that brings warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
