Portrait of Emotions 3
Acrylic On Unstretched Canvas
23 × 37 cm
R2 200
Portrait of Emotions 3 is an expressive portrait of a woman rendered almost entirely in greens. Mint, sage and deep emerald sweep across the face and shoulders, worked with a loaded brush and palette knife, while a single passage of bright orange glows at one shoulder like a spark of warmth. Her features soften into the surrounding marks, giving the figure a dreaming, slightly downcast air.
Julie Tugwell handles the paint freely, letting drags and scrapes of colour build the head against an open white ground. The cool green palette gives the work a fresh, contemplative mood, and the lone flash of orange provides a deliberate, well-judged counterpoint that draws the eye. There is a lovely balance here between energy and stillness, spontaneity and control.
Part of her Portrait of Emotions series, this piece carries a quiet, modern elegance. Its cool greens and clean white space make it easy to live with, suiting a calm bedroom, a study, or a considered gallery wall, where its expressive brushwork and single warm accent can bring atmosphere and understated character to the room.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her figurative work she reaches for atmosphere and inner feeling rather than exact likeness, letting a face form within loose, gestural marks. Whether working in cool, tonal greens or bolder colour, she captures the mood and vitality of a subject, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
