There’s a Rhythm

Acrylic On Unstretched Canvas
126 × 110 cm

There’s a Rhythm is a large, energetic abstract built from sweeping, gestural brushstrokes that seem to swirl and collide across the canvas. Broad arcs of white, plum and deep indigo curve through the centre, while cooler passages of turquoise, sea-green and bright cerulean open out at the edges. There is no fixed subject to name — instead the eye is carried around the surface by movement, contrast and the sheer physical energy of the paint.

The palette is rich and moody, pairing dusky mauve and wine-red with clear blues and teal greens, and lifting the whole with bold slashes of white. Julie Tugwell works with obvious spontaneity here, layering dry-brushed texture over smoother sweeps so that the canvas holds both drama and depth. As the title suggests, there is a real sense of rhythm and music in the composition — a push and pull between calm and turbulence that keeps the painting alive.

At well over a metre wide, this is a confident statement work for a large wall in a living room, stairwell, studio or office. Its cool-toned, contemporary palette anchors a modern interior beautifully, while its scale and gestural power give a space instant character. An expressive, unstretched original ready to command attention.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, gestural traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her abstract work she lets colour, movement and texture carry the painting, capturing atmosphere and feeling rather than any literal subject. The result is an original artwork that brings warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
