Chemistry of Currents is a large, energetic abstract that fills the wall with movement and colour. Across the square canvas Julie Tugwell layers drifting fields of sky blue, acid green, coral and deep plum, then scatters them with quick black lines that dart and loop like currents of air or water. Nothing sits still; the surface seems to shift and recombine the longer you look.
Working in acrylic on unstretched canvas, she builds the painting from broad, gestural strokes and flurries of pale petal-pink and white, punctuated by pockets of near-black that give the composition depth and weight. Thin rivulets of paint run to the lower edge, a reminder of the fluid, improvisational way the work was made.
The result is lively without being loud, its balance of cool blues and warm oranges keeping the eye travelling from corner to corner. A statement piece of this scale brings instant energy to a spacious lounge, stairwell or reception area, and its wide colour range settles comfortably against both crisp modern interiors and softer, more traditional rooms.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her abstracts she lets colour, gesture and rhythm lead, building layered surfaces that reward slow looking. Whether working in bold colour or a more restrained, tonal palette, she captures atmosphere and vitality rather than literal description, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
