Women’s Dream
Oil On Stretched Canvas
100 × 75 cm
R15 000
Women’s Dream is an atmospheric, dreamlike painting built around a reclining nude figure who stretches across the lower half of the canvas. She is painted with fluid, softened brushwork, her form emerging and dissolving into the surface, while around her a scattering of ghostly faces and half-seen figures surface from the haze like fragments of a passing thought.
The palette is tonal and restrained rather than bright, worked in soft greys, warm ochres and muted browns with quiet touches of dusky red. Julie Tugwell lets light and gesture carry the mood, layering and scraping the paint so that nothing is fully resolved. The result is introspective and a little mysterious, holding the viewer in that hazy space between waking and dreaming.
This is a painting that rewards contemplation and suits a considered interior, a study, bedroom or quiet lounge, where its subtle, muted palette settles easily against neutral walls. It brings a thoughtful, contemporary presence to a space rather than demanding attention, revealing more of its detail the longer it is lived with.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. Whether working in bold colour or a restrained, tonal palette, she captures the atmosphere and vitality of a subject rather than a literal likeness. Her paintings range across florals, landscapes, figures and abstracts, and each original artwork is made to bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
