Pezula Lily Pond 4 is a dark, contemplative study of a still lily pond, its surface almost black in the shadows. Green lily pads drift in loose clusters across the water, and a few pale blooms, soft white and yellow, catch the light among them. Along the top of the canvas, dense reflected foliage merges with the water in a shimmer of green and grey.
Julie Tugwell works here in a deep, tonal palette, letting the near-black water dominate while flecks of green, silver and warm yellow describe the pads and reflections. The effect is quiet and immersive, closer to Impressionist observation than bold statement.
