Knysna Colours is an expressive, semi-abstract landscape built from bold blocks of colour and confident, palette-knife texture. A brooding sky of deep blue-grey and billowing white cloud presses down over a range of dark hills, which dip at the centre to reveal a pale band of distant light. Below, the land dissolves into vivid strokes of pink, magenta, ochre and gold.
Julie Tugwell lets colour and mark do the work here, contrasting the cool weight of the sky and hills with a warm, almost jewelled foreground. The paint is applied thickly and freely, its ridges and scrapes catching the light and giving the surface a lively, tactile quality. The scene reads as a place and a mood at once, a coastal landscape distilled to its essential colour and drama.
This is a punchy, characterful work that brings energy and a sense of place to a wall. Its bold colour makes it a natural focal point in a living room, entrance or creative workspace, and it looks especially striking against a plain, neutral background that lets the pinks, golds and blues sing. A confident choice for an interior that welcomes colour.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions and echoes the freedom of Fauvist colour, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her bolder landscapes she reduces a scene to its essential colour, texture and mood, working with palette knife and thick, gestural paint. She captures the vitality and atmosphere of a place rather than a literal likeness, creating original paintings that bring warmth, character and sophistication to contemporary interiors.
