Palette Petals 4

Acrylic On Board

R2 500

Palette Petals 4 is a small, richly textured floral still life of soft pink, lilac and peach blooms massed in a turquoise-blue pot. Julie Tugwell heaps the paint on thickly, each flower formed from a cluster of loaded knife strokes, so the bouquet reads as a shimmering, close-packed drift of petals rather than any single, carefully described flower.

The mood is warm yet slightly moody. Gentle pinks, mauves and creams glow at the centre of the arrangement, lifted by small sparks of red, orange and yellow, while a deep, shadowy background throws the flowers forward and makes their colours sing. The jewelled turquoise pot anchors the composition and adds a cool, contemporary note against a pale, softly brushed table.

Small and full of character, Palette Petals 4 is easy to place and rewarding to live with. It suits a shelf, mantel or bedside, or a wall of grouped miniatures, bringing a touch of painterly warmth and colour to a study, hallway or intimate corner of the home.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her floral work she leans into bold, singing colour that echoes the Fauvist palette, building petals, leaves and vessels with confident, loaded strokes of the knife and brush. She captures the vitality and atmosphere of the flowers rather than a botanical likeness, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
