A Garden of Dreams
Acrylic On Stretched Canvas
56 × 70 cm
R18 000
A Garden of Dreams is a joyful, densely planted floral in which the whole canvas becomes a flowering border seen up close. Spires of pink blossom, round violet-blue agapanthus heads and creamy white lilies rise on slender stems, interlaced with darting leaves and buds in red, blue and gold, so that flowers fill the frame from edge to edge.
The colour is bold and singing. Julie Tugwell sets warm pinks and reds against cool turquoise and olive-green grounds, letting complementary tones spark against one another in a way that echoes the Fauvist love of pure, expressive colour. The effect is exuberant and celebratory, alive with the energy of a garden in full bloom yet held together by a sure sense of rhythm and balance.
At this size the painting makes a generous, uplifting focal point. A Garden of Dreams brings freshness and warmth to a living room, dining room or entrance hall, its abundant colour lifting the mood of a space and pairing beautifully with both neutral and richly decorated interiors.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her floral work she leans into bold, singing colour that echoes the Fauvist palette, building petals, leaves and vessels with confident, loaded strokes of the knife and brush. She captures the vitality and atmosphere of the flowers rather than a botanical likeness, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
