Palette Petals 2

Palette Petals 2 is a small, exuberant floral still life in which a full bouquet of red, pink, yellow and white flowers tumbles from a warm terracotta pot. Julie Tugwell builds the blooms from thick, decisive strokes of the knife, each mark reading as a petal or leaf, so the little arrangement feels loose, lively and freshly picked.

The colour play is central to the painting. Hot reds and sunny yellows sing out against a cool turquoise-blue background, while the earthy ochre of the pot anchors everything to a softly brushed table below. This contrast of warm flowers and cool ground gives the tiny work real vibrancy and depth, its heavily textured surface catching the light from every angle.

Compact and characterful, Palette Petals 2 slips easily into almost any space. Hang it alone as a bright accent, prop it on a shelf or desk, or cluster it with other small works to build a personal gallery wall that brings warmth and colour to a kitchen, study or cosy corner.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her floral work she leans into bold, singing colour that echoes the Fauvist palette, building petals, leaves and vessels with confident, loaded strokes of the knife and brush. She captures the vitality and atmosphere of the flowers rather than a botanical likeness, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
