Nude 5
Oil on Board — Unframed
17 × 13 cm
R1 400
Nude 5 is a charcoal-toned study of the female torso, partly draped with loose folds of cloth that fall to either side of the body. Julie Tugwell works almost entirely in soft blacks, greys and smoky whites, building the figure through gentle gradations of light and shadow so the drapery and skin share the same hushed, monochrome world. The face is left out of frame, keeping the focus on form, texture and the quiet drama of light.
There is a soft, sculptural quality to the piece. The fabric frames the torso like a set of loose curtains, and the smudged, blended handling gives everything a velvety, atmospheric finish. It reads as intimate and contemplative rather than overt — a study of the body as much about mood and material as anatomy.
Supplied unframed on board, this small original is easy to place and could be set into a frame of your choosing. Its tonal restraint suits a bedroom, dressing room, study or a monochrome gallery wall, bringing a note of soft, classical figuration and understated elegance to a contemporary interior.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her figure studies she works with a restrained, tonal palette, using light, shadow and gesture to capture the quiet presence and atmosphere of the body rather than a literal likeness, creating an original artwork that brings warmth, character and considered sophistication to a contemporary interior.
