Master of Fortune
Acrylic On Unstretched Canvas
154 × 120 cm
Master of Fortune is a large, tender figurative painting of two figures caught in a close embrace. One leans protectively over the other, a hand cradling the head while an arm draws the pair together, their bodies drawn with the flowing, unhurried line that runs through much of Julie Tugwell’s figurative work.
The mood here is intimate and reflective rather than bold. The palette stays soft and atmospheric, built from dusky pinks, sage and olive greens and warm cream, with a pale moon rising in a shadowed upper corner and sprays of leaves and small blossoms framing the couple. Loose, washy brushwork lets the forms melt gently into their surroundings, giving the whole scene a quiet, dreamlike stillness.
At this generous scale the painting carries real presence while remaining calm and contemplative. It suits a bedroom, a private study or a serene living space, anywhere a large work with warmth and emotional depth can anchor the room without overwhelming it, rewarding a closer, slower kind of looking.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. Whether working in bold colour or a restrained, tonal palette, she captures the atmosphere and vitality of a subject rather than a literal likeness. Her paintings range across florals, landscapes, figures and abstracts, and each original artwork is made to bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
