Marquette Master is a contemplative figurative painting set in the quiet of an artist’s studio. At its centre, a wooden artist’s mannequin sits slumped on a folding blue chair, one jointed hand raised to its head in a pose of weariness or deep thought. To the left, a second, darker figure stands apart against a softly painted wall, adding to the scene’s reflective, slightly melancholy stillness.

Julie Tugwell works in a muted, tonal palette of dove grey, pale green, ochre and soft blue, with the cool floor and a warm pool of yellow beneath the seated figure grounding the composition. The paint is applied loosely and atmospherically, the studio dissolving into soft washes so that attention settles on the lonely, oddly human posture of the little wooden model.

Understated and quietly poignant, this is a painting about creativity, pause and the artist’s own solitary process. Its restrained colours and thoughtful mood suit a study, studio or calm living space, where its gentle atmosphere and subtle storytelling can be appreciated. A characterful, introspective original for collectors who value mood and narrative over bright colour.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her figurative work she moves freely between the observed and the imagined, combining images and moods to suggest feeling and story rather than a literal scene. Whether working in bold colour or a more restrained, tonal palette, she captures atmosphere and character, creating original artworks that bring warmth, depth and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
