Landscape of Colours 2

Landscape of Colours 2 is an expressive, semi-abstract landscape in which sky and land meet in bands of vivid, contrasting colour. A warm ochre and gold sky is swept through with soft grey cloud and a ribbon of pink light, sitting above a dark, almost black range of low hills. The foreground opens into further passages of gold, pink and charcoal.

Julie Tugwell works with broad, confident strokes and palette-knife texture, setting the glowing warmth of the sky against the deep, shadowed land. The pinks and golds feel lit from within, while the dark tones anchor and ground the composition. Detail is suggested rather than described, so the painting hovers between a recognisable landscape and a pure arrangement of colour and mark.

The result is a warm, atmospheric work with real presence on a wall. Its rich golds and moody darks bring a sense of dusk and drama to a room, working well in a living space, dining room or study, and standing out handsomely against neutral or dark-toned walls. One of a series, it can be hung alone or grouped with its companion landscapes for greater impact.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions and echoes the freedom of Fauvist colour, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her bolder landscapes she reduces a scene to its essential colour, texture and mood, working with palette knife and thick, gestural paint. She captures the vitality and atmosphere of a place rather than a literal likeness, creating original paintings that bring warmth, character and sophistication to contemporary interiors.
