Fynbos Flowers is a vibrant celebration of South Africa’s indigenous flora, packed edge to edge with blooms. Pink and blue spikes, small daisy-like flowers, curling tendrils and rich red pincushion-style proteas jostle together against a soft teal and green ground. Julie Tugwell fills the canvas with pattern and life, layering warm pinks, cobalt and turquoise blues, sunny yellows and deep greens into a dense, decorative tapestry of fynbos.

The mood is cheerful and abundant. Loose, confident brushwork and playful, folk-inflected shapes give the flowers a hand-drawn charm, while the cooler background lets the warm reds and pinks sing. There is a lovely sense of rhythm across the surface, the eye travelling from bloom to bloom, catching the little curled stems and bright pops of colour along the way.

Well suited to a living room, kitchen, bedroom or bright office, this original brings a distinctly South African garden indoors. Its uplifting colour and busy, joyful composition add warmth, personality and a sense of place to a contemporary interior, making an easy, characterful focal point on almost any wall.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose floral work echoes the freedom and vivid colour of the Fauvist painters, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. She captures the abundance and vitality of indigenous fynbos rather than a botanical likeness, layering bold, decorative colour and expressive marks to create original artworks that bring warmth, joy and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
