Dark Night of the Soul

Oil on Stretched Canvas
30 × 40 cm
R8 000

Dark Night of the Soul is a brooding, tonal portrait rendered almost entirely in black, white and shades of grey. A woman emerges from the shadows, her face lowered and eyes closed, painted with loose, gestural strokes and bold sweeps of the palette knife. Julie Tugwell lets rough, unfinished passages remain, so the figure feels caught between light and darkness, present yet dissolving into the abstract ground around her.

There is real emotional weight to this small painting. The restrained, near-monochrome palette and expressive handling give it a quiet intensity, while faint warm touches at the lower edge break the greys just enough to keep the work from feeling cold. It is introspective and atmospheric, carried by mood and gesture rather than precise likeness.

At 30 × 40 cm this is an intimate, collectable work with a strong presence far beyond its size. Its moody, monochrome palette makes it a striking choice for a study, bedroom, hallway or a considered gallery grouping, where its contemplative character can be appreciated at close range.

Style

Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her figurative work she captures mood, presence and inner life rather than photographic likeness, working here in a restrained, tonal palette where gesture and light do the talking. The result is a body of original artworks that bring depth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
