Portrait of Emotions 6
Acrylic On Unstretched Canvas
23 × 36 cm
R2 200
Portrait of Emotions 6 is an expressive portrait built from layered greens and teals. Deep emerald, mint and cool blue-green sweep across the head and shoulders, lit by flashes of bright yellow around the face and neck. The features are only partly resolved, emerging from vigorous knife-work so that the figure seems to shift between clarity and dissolution as you look.
Julie Tugwell keeps the surface alive with drags, scrapes and broken strokes, working against a clean white ground that lets the colour sing. The cool green palette gives the piece a fresh, introspective mood, while the yellow accents bring light and movement to the centre of the composition. The effect is at once energetic and contemplative, spontaneous yet carefully balanced.
One of her Portrait of Emotions series, this work has a quiet, modern confidence. Its greens and clean white space make it easy to place, suiting a calm study, bedroom or gallery-style wall, where its expressive handling and bright touches of yellow can bring atmosphere and understated character to the room.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her figurative pieces she reaches for atmosphere and inner feeling rather than exact likeness, letting a face emerge from loose, gestural marks. Whether working in cool greens and teals or bolder colour, she captures the mood and vitality of a subject, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
