Palette Petals 3
Acrylic On Board
18 × 20 cm
R2 500
Palette Petals 3 is a small, warm-hearted floral still life in which a bunch of orange, red, pink and yellow flowers spills generously from a rounded vase. Julie Tugwell builds the blooms and their broad green leaves from thick, buttery strokes of the palette knife, letting the paint stand proud of the board so the whole arrangement feels lush and full.
The colour is bold and sunny. Fiery oranges and reds glow at the heart of the bouquet, softened by pale pinks and creams and set against cool passages of blue and teal in the background and table. This warm-against-cool contrast gives the little painting a bright, cheerful energy, while the loose brushwork keeps it fresh and unfussy.
At this handy size Palette Petals 3 is easy to hang and pleasing to live with. It brings an instant lift of colour to a kitchen, study, hallway or bedside, whether shown on its own as a small accent or grouped with other petite works to create a cheerful, characterful display.
Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her floral work she leans into bold, singing colour that echoes the Fauvist palette, building petals, leaves and vessels with confident, loaded strokes of the knife and brush. She captures the vitality and atmosphere of the flowers rather than a botanical likeness, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
