Conversations in Colour
Acrylic on Canvas
35 × 45 cm
R7 000
Conversations in Colour places two female figures within a warm, glowing field of colour. One stands to the left, her pale torso and softly drawn form leaning into the scene; the other sits to the right, back turned, her body rendered in shifting patches of green, gold, pink and blue. Around and between them the canvas burns with red, orange and yellow, cooled at the edges by green and blue, so the figures feel held within colour rather than set against it.
This is figure painting handled with real freedom. Julie Tugwell draws the body with loose, confident strokes, letting warm and cool tones meet and spark in the manner of the Fauvist painters she admires. Contours are suggested rather than fixed, and skin, cloth and background flow into one another, giving the work its sense of movement and its quiet feeling of exchange between the two figures.
At 35 × 45 cm it is an intimate, easy-to-place original with plenty of presence. Portrait in format, Conversations in Colour suits a living room, studio, bedroom or hallway, and brings warmth, energy and a confident contemporary edge to spaces that welcome expressive colour.

Style
Julie Tugwell is a contemporary South African artist whose work shares qualities with expressive, painterly traditions, favouring energetic brushwork and an emotional response to her subject over strict realism. In her figure work she reads the human form through colour and gesture, building the body with loose, confident strokes and letting warm and cool tones play against one another in a way that echoes the Fauvist love of pure, expressive colour. She captures the mood and movement of her subjects rather than a literal likeness, creating original artworks that bring warmth, character and considered sophistication to contemporary interiors.
